The Centre Georges Pompidou was built during the 1970s (1971–1977). It is a cultural center named after Georges Pompidou, President of France from 1969 to 1974. it was officially inaugurated on 31 January 1977 by an other French President, Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. Today it is widely known as the 'Pompidou Centre' in English. It is a large complex located in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, in the Beaubourg area, between Les Halles and the Marais. It was designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, an Italian and a British architects, in the style of an high-tech architecture.
The Centre Georges Pompidou houses the BPI, a vast public library (Bibliothèque publique d'information), the MNAM, or Musée National d'Art Moderne, and the IRCAM, an institute for music and acoustic research. The Centre is also known locally as Beaubourg beacause of its location in an area of that name. The Centre Pompidou has had over 150 million visitors since 1977.
