The Eiffel Tower is the name of an iron tower built in Paris, between the Champ de Mars and the Seine River. This tower, named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, has become a global icon of France and is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. It is the tallest building in Paris. 6,719,200 people visited the tower in 2006. This Paris tower remains the most visited paid monument in the world.
The Eiffel Tower, named after engineer Gustave Eiffel, its designer. It is still today the tallest building in Paris. More than two hundred million people have visited this French monument since it was erected in 1889, including nearly 7 million in 2006. It is today the most visited paid monument in the world. If we include the 79 ft (24 m) antenna at its top, the whole structure is 1,063 ft (324 m) high, roughly the equivalence of an 81-level conventional building.
At the time it was completed (in 1889) the Eiffel Tower was the world's tallest building, and it retained this title until the completion of a New York City's 1,047 ft (319 m) tall tower, the Chrysler Building, in 1930. The Eiffel Tower is now the 5th biggest structure in France and the tallest building in Paris, the 689-ft-high Tour Montparnasse (210 m) being the second-tallest.
The whole metal structure weighs 7,300 tonnes while the entire structure of the Eiffel Tower with non-metal elements is roughly 10,000 tonnes. The top of the Eiffel Tower may shift away by up to 7 inches (18 cm) depending on the temperature.
Visitors can access the first and second levels by lifts and stairways. Tickets to access the stairs are sold at a ticket booth at the south base of the tower. To access the third level and summit visitors must take the lift.
Maintenance of the tower implies the use of 60 tonnes of paint every seven years to avoid rust. To give the tower a uniform appearance when seen from the ground, 3 separate colors of paint are used, the lightest color at the top of it and the darkest on the bottom. |
