Montmartre is a hill in the north of Paris, in the 18th arrondissement.
The 'Butte Montmartre' as the French say, is 130 meter high, on top of which stands the Sacre Coeur (Sacred Heart), a white-domed basilica.
A second church called Saint Pierre de Montmartre and located near the Sacre Coeur claims to be the place where the Jesuit order was created.
The Montmartre area is widely known and famous for its artistic atmosphere. Many artists once lived on the hill, such as Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Modigliani and Salvador Dali. Visitors appreciate walking around in Montmartre, especially near the lively Place du Tertre with its many restaurants, galleries and museums.
