What is the chicline.com directory ?
Chicline.com is THE on line directory of quality tourist, shopping and leisure websites in and around Paris. Web sites are divided into eight main categories, each one divided into several sub-categories. The chicline.com directory also contains guide pages of information visitors about places or monuments of interest. Most of the guide pages can be found in the "Sightseeing" category.
What is a category ?
The chicline.com directory lists web sites according to eight principal categories:
- Travel : Getting prepared for your trip to Paris
- Practical Information : Every day living and reference points
- Lodging : Parisian Hotels, and reservations
- Restaurants : Restaurants, cafés, bars, reservations
- Sightseeing : Discovering tourist sites around town
- Shopping : A fine selection of boutiques and shops (non-food)
- Gourmet : Great selection of gourmet shops and boutiques
- Leisure : Events, shows - day and night
What is a "Category page" ?
Each category and sub category of the directory contains 10 by 10 lists of web sites.
What is a "Guide page" ?
A guide page is a page of tourist information written by the editors at chicline.com. These pages offer top quality information about a tourist landmark, a monument, a museum or a "quartier" (neighborhood), etc… At the bottom of each of these pages links related to the subjects covered are offered to visitors: A guide page for a quartier or a monument, for example, will contain links to restaurants, hotels etc… in that part of town.
How can I find a guide page quickly in the chicline.com directory ?
There are four ways to quickly access guide pages:
1. Display the category: Guide pages are classified by category. When a category offers up guide pages, these are always displayed on the top of the first page (For example: Home > Sightseeing > Information > Towns). After three guide pages, click on "All guide pages" to display the complete list of guide pages in that category.
2. Keyword search: During keyword searches, the guide pages are always displayed at the top of the first result page.
3. "My chicline": A visitor can store (memorize) up to 50 guides pages and sites in the favorites list.
4. "Map and Guide": Click on this option in the left-hand column of the home page to make an interactive map of Paris appear. With it you can locate the 20 arrondissements of the capital, each one with its list of quartiers and, with a simple click, read the relevant guide pages.

What types of sites are available in the chicline.com directory ?
Two kinds of web sites are available through the chicline.com directory:
1. Web sites with addresses in and around Paris: These could be hotel web sites, restaurants, boutiques, tourist offices, etc… The visitor can select sites along two geographic criteria: arrondissement and quartier for inner Paris, and department and town for outside the city.
2. Web sites with no address in Paris: These are web sites whose activity exists only on the Internet (reservation or on-line commercial activity sites for example) or sites whose addresses are of no particular interest to the visitor (Airlines and transportation companies, brand name sites, etc…).

How do I use the "Selection" line offered in certain directory categories ?
The "Selection" line only appears in those categories which group together sites with addresses in and around Paris. It allows the visitor to browse sites by local address. Mostly it is used for hotels, restaurants and boutiques as a general public welcome forum.
Site selection can be made along two criteria:
- The arrondissement and quartier for inner city Parisian addresses
- The département and the town for addresses outside the city

What does the "All addresses" link, displayed on certain site descriptions, do ?
This link brings up a new page with all the local addresses associated with a web site displayed in alphabetical order.
What criteria are used to classify web sites in the directory categories ?
Web site classification within a category depends directly on the interest it generates to visitors. This interest is measured by the number of visits (i.e. number of clicks) the site receives during a given period. It is therefore necessary to give a web site as clear a title and description as possible to facilitate content comprehension by visitors.
How do I find the directory category in which a web site is listed ?
Simply use the search engine by clicking on a title or address or any other distinguishing keyword.
What are the rules used in listing websites in the chicline.com directory ?
Any web site in conformity with current listing rules is welcome in the chicline.com directory. The editorial team reserves the right to accept or reject sites listing depending on their conformity to these rules.
I clicked on a site listed in the directory, but received an error message. Can I notify you of this ?

Search Engine

What does the chicline.com search engine do ?
The search engine facilitates information retrieval about Paris and the Parisian region. Entering keywords in the search field will display a selection of websites from the directory which contains one or more references to the keywords in their title, description, address or URL.
How do I use the search engine ?
Simply choose one or more keywords pertinent to the desired subject. Remember the more specific the keyword, the more accurate the results. It is recommended that only one or two words be used to limit the number of responses displayed on the result pages.
What's the difference between the directory and the search engine ?
The directory lists websites thematically, divided into categories and sub-categories. These categories branch out at several levels from the most general to the most specific. The search engine displays web sites from keywords input by the visitor. Each web site whose title, description, address or URL contains those keywords will appear.
What is a "Result page" ?
A "Result page" is generated by the search engine and contains web sites which correspond to the criteria input by the visitor. These result page(s) generally display the occurrences of the keywords input in the title, description, address or URL of the selected sites.
What types of information are given on result pages ?
The same as is found in the directory categories:
- Tourist web sites, with or without postal addresses in or around Paris
- Guide pages informing visitors about the tourist value of places, monuments, etc.
What are the rules used in listing websites in the result pages ?
Every web site whose title, description address or URL contains one of the keywords input by the visitor appears in the search results. The classification of the site within these results depends on its degree of pertinence to each of the keywords. Pertinence is calculated by an internal algorithm.
How can I find my web site listing quickly using the search engine ?
Simply enter your site name address or URL or any specific keyword found in the title or description in the search field .. The more specific the keyword, the fewer the search results.
For what purposes are the "Directory" and "Category" options in the search bar ?
These options modify the extent of the keyword search: if, within a given category, the visitor chooses the "Category" (default option) the engine will only search sites within that category. If the visitor chooses the "Directory" option, the engine will cross all categories to extract results.
Can I limit my information search to a given category ?
If you're in a given category, you can opt to search only those sites contained within it. Simply verify that the "Category" option has been selected (default option).
Can I expand my information search to the entire directory ?

What listing process is employed for web sites by Chichline.com ?
Site listing is assured by our editorial team. Listings are either done directly or via daily submissions.
Our editors choose web sites deemed of interest to chicline.com visitors and enter them into the directory. They also consider submissions from web sites and compare them to the current listing rules on chicline.com. It should be noted that all websites listed are the exclusive property of their individual publishers and remain under their sole control.
What listing rules are employed for web sites in chicline.com ?

How do I find the most appropriate category for my web site ?
Check that your site corresponds to one of the principal categories on the home page. If you have doubts, navigate farther into the closest category.
I cannot find an appropriate category for my site. Can I suggest a new category for the chicline.com directory ?
Yes. If you cannot find a suitable category for your site, send a message with your suggestion to edito @ chicline.com.
Is my web site listing in the chichline.com directory free of charge ?
Yes. Entirely free of charge.
Is my web site listing in the chichline.com directory guaranteed ?
No, final decision is at the discretion of the chicline.com editorial team.
After submitting my web site, I receive an error message telling me the session has ended. Why ?
A "session" is the time allocated for submitting your web site. Should the network become saturated, or close to it, the time imparted to you can be abridged, ending your session. If this happens you will have to restart your submission. We recommend you wait a few minutes before restarting, and that you use a high-speed (ADSL) connection.
After submitting my web site will I be informed of its reception by the editorial team ?
Yes, an E-Mail will be sent to you confirming your submission. This E-Mail will be sent to the address indicated in the "Profile" section of "My chicline". You can learn the current status of your suggestion at any time by consulting the "My Submissions" page (Check the status displayed in your submission's header).
Will I be informed if my site is accepted or refused ?
Yes. All acceptances and rejections will be sent to the E-Mail address indicated in you "My chicline" account.
How can I learn the current status of my web site submission ?
Open your personal "My chicline" account and click on the "My Submissions" option. The status of your submission will be displayed on the submissions header. "Submission Validated" will be displayed in green, "Submission in process" in Orange "Submission refused" in red. As soon as editorial has made a decision on your submission you will receive an E-Mail.
Is it possible to list dynamically generated web pages (ASP, PHP, etc…) in the chicline.com directory ?
Yes, as long as they are not redundant in the chicline.com directory.
Can a web site have several listings in the chicline.com directory ?
The vast majority of web sites are listed only once. However under certain conditions, a site may be listed twice maximum. Sometimes web sites cross category boundaries, and can be usefully listed in more than one. The editors reserve the exclusive right to decide this.
I have submitted my web site but after several days it is still not listed. Why ?
Your submission has been received by the editorial team at chicline.com. Due to high demand, a week or two can pass before you receive any notification of the status of your submission. While the editors reserve sole right of acceptance or refusal in accordance with current listing rules, if your listing is not posted within two weeks, please notify edito @ chicline.com.
My site was listed in the chicline.com directory, but I can't find it anymore. Why ?
Possibly modification made to your site violated current listing rules and was deleted. If you feel this was done in error, please notify edito @ chicline.com.
My web site is listed in the chicline.com directory, but I don't know who listed it!
It was probably picked up by one of our editors. If this was done in error, please send your complaint to edito @ chicline.com (with your first and last name, function and phone).
Are there limits to the numbers of characters I may use in my web site title and description ?
Title and description are limited in the submissions form to 10 and 40 characters respectively, however the editorial team reserves the right to adapt titles and descriptions for better comprehension by chicline.com visitors.
May I include key words in my web site title and description ?
The chicline.com editorial team checks that each title and description corresponds to its content, and that the descriptions are not a compilation of keywords designed to enhance the web site's classification to the detriment of others on the result pages. Besides these restrictions, all texts submitted are permitted.
May I change the title or description of my web site ?
To do this, open your "My chicline" account and click on the "My Submissions" section. When you've found the submission which corresponds to your site, click on "Edit" to perform your updates. Your input can take two weeks to validate depending on the number of requests being processed. The editorial team reserves the right to adapt titles and descriptions for better comprehension by chicline.com visitors.
chicline.com listed my web site directly. Can I still modify the title and description ?
Yes. Simply send a request to edito @ chicline.com with your " My chicline " ID and E-Mail address. We will immediately transfer your title and description to your "My chicline" account from which you can submit your modifications.
Why are the title and description for my web site different from those I submitted ?
The editorial team reserves the right to adapt titles and descriptions for quality and better comprehension by chicline.com visitors.
Why is my web site not listed in the category I chose during submission ?
The editorial team reserves the right to adapt the category of a web site in the directory.
Is it possible to use a re-directing URL for my web site address ?
No, these are not accepted in the chicline.com directory.
I asked that the URL / Title / Description of my website be modified. Why has none made ?
Your submission has been taken into account by the editorial team, however due to heavy demand it may take several days between your submission and validation in the directory. chicline.com also reserves to right to accept or refuse any modifications which do not conform to the current listing rules.
My web site's URL has changed. Do I notify chicline.com, or is this change automatically detected ?
No and, as redirecting URL's are not accepted, changes must be submitted in a message to edito @ chicline.com.

Postal Address Listings

Are postal addresses accepted in the chicline.com directory ?
Yes. In fact it is recommended to associate a web site with postal addresses in or around Paris, provided the category chosen for your site can accept them. Postal addresses increase your site's visibility via the multiple listings in the directory pages under geographic breakdowns like arrondissement, quartier, département, and town.
What are the criteria for listing a postal address in the chicline.com directory ?
Your site must be listed in a category which accepts postal addresses and the address must actually exist in or around Paris, and this address must be listed in your web site.
How do I associate a postal address with my web site ?
Go into your "My chicline" account and click on "My Submissions". When you have found the submission associated with your site, click on "Add an address" and fill out the form. Please note that no addresses will be validated until the site itself has been approved by our editorial team.
How do I modify or delete a postal address associated with my web site ?
Go into your "My chicline" account and click on "My Submissions". When you have found the submission associated with the postal address to modify or delete, click on "Modify" or "Delete". All information contained in an address (Street address, zip code, arrondissement, quartier, metro) must be approved by the editorial staff of chicline.com before being listed in the directory. Deletions, however, are immediate.
How can I learn the current status of my E-Mail address submission ?
Open your personal "My chicline" account and click on the "My Submissions" option. The status of your submission will be displayed on the submissions header. "Submission Validated" will be displayed in green, "Submission in process" in Orange "Submission refused" in red. As soon as editorial has made a decision on your submission you will receive an E-Mail.
Why does my Web Site not list the arrondissement, quartier or metro station I submitted ?
For reasons of continuity and site quality, the editorial team reserves the right to correct any errors and to choose the options best suited to the address communicated.

How are web sites classified in the chicline.com directory ?
The classification of a web site within its category increases with the number of visits it receives. The most visited sites are therefore logically displayed in the first pages of a category. Please note classifications are distinct for English and French.
How can I ensure my web site appears in the directory pages ?
You web site must be "submitted" using the "Submit a web site" form. This link is available at the bottom of every directory page. The site must then be validated by chicline editors for conformity with the current listing rules. Please note: to submit a web site for consideration you must open a "My chicline" account.
How can I improve my web site classification within its category ?
High quality web site attracts more visitors and automatically increases its standing in the chicline.com directory. Other criteria: let your friends and relations know about your good ranking in the chicline.com's pages; and most of all, submit well-focused, targeted, web sites with specific goals whose title and description accurately describe their content. Also try to promote Bi-Lingual content (French/English) to appeal to a wider audience. Finally; accurate META tags in both English and French cannot help but increase interest in your site through better content comprehension
What can I do to ensure my web site appears on the first page of a category ?
Web site classification depends on the number of visits it receives during a given period (number of clicks recorded). The top sites in each category are, therefore, those which have had the most visits.
What can I do to list my web site in both the English and French version of the directory ?
All listings automatically appear in both language directories. However, if a web site is written in only one language, it will be listed only in that language.
I have improved the Ergonomics / Graphics / Interface / performance of my website. Will these changes be taken into account in my web site's classification ?
Chicline.com does not take web site improvements into account in its classification system. However it is highly probably that your classification will improve automatically as traffic through the directory increases.
Why is my web site classified differently within the same categories in the English and French versions of the directory ?
As the classification system depends on the number of clicks a web site receives during a given period, there can be differences between the numbers of French versus English visitors to each site.
The search engine has confirmed my web site listing in the chicline.com directory, yet I do not find it when I click on its category. Why ?
If your site's category lists more than 10 sites, you will have to navigate to the page listing your web site. In this way you will also be able to judge your site's classification among peers.
How can I ensure my web site appears in the result pages ?
Once your web site has been approved by the chicline.com editorial team, it will be listed in the directory. Its presence in the answer pages is assured if a visitor searches using any keyword contained in the title, description, address or URL.
My web site appears in its category, but I don't see it in the result pages. Why ?

The classification of a web site on the "selection" pages increases with the number of visits it receives (number of clicks recorded). Thus, from one arrondissement or quartier to another, a web site's classification here can be different than in the directory pages.
Do several submissions for the same web site entered over a short period improve the chances of its being listed ?
You are strongly advised NOT to make multiple submissions for the same web site. As submissions are considered sequentially, multiple submissions can increase the approval delay of your site by our editorial team. If the E-Mail address in your "profile" is correct, you will receive an acceptance or a refusal within one to two weeks depending on traffic.
My web site is listed in the chicline.com directory and I would like to resubmit it to improve its classification within its category. Is this advisable ?
It is not only ill-advised but useless to resubmit a site already listed in the chicline.com directory. All web site classifications are done in real time and reflect the site's standing at any given moment. It is advisable, however, to improve your site's title and description to attract more visitors.

"My chicline" is a personalized service accessible to all visitors. This service allows the visitor to:

Are the services offered in "My chicline" free of charge ?

How can I create a "My chicline" account ?
Simply click on "Sign me up" in the left-hand column of the home page, enter a username and password and complete the form.
For how long is a "My chicline" account valid ?
As long as it remains in use. If there is no activity for six months, the account may be automatically closed without any notice.
Why do I need a password to access "My chicline"
All information contained in your "My chicline" account is personal and confidential. Passwords are used to limit access to authorized users only.
I've lost my "My chicline" password. How do I recover it ?
Click now on the "Recover my Password" page, and enter your username. Your password will be sent to the E-Mail address used in your "My chicline" account.
My password doesn't work. How can I access "My chicline" ?
Proceed as above. If the problem persists, perhaps you are using the wrong username, or mis-keying the information (Caps are important). As a last resort, create another "My chicline" account.
Can I modify my password ?
Yes. Go into your "My chicline" account and click on "My Profile".
Are personal data protected in chicline.com ?
chicline is committed to protecting all personal information entered in "My chicline" and "My Profile". For more information, see: "Privacy Policy".
Can I access and modify my personal data at any time in "My chicline" ?
Yes. Any account holder can enter their account and modify their data at any time. chicline.com conforms to the "Informatique et Libertés" French law obliging web site publishers to make all personal information accessible and modifiable to their adherents. Why must I list my e-mail address in "My Profile" ?
Your e-mail address is necessary for your subscription to "La Lettre de Paris". Your e-mail also allows us to keep you informed about your web site submissions and, finally, it allows us to renew your password in the event you should forget it.
Why is my address required for "My Profile" ?
This information is voluntary. Nonetheless, it does allow us to better respond to your tourist information needs. We also use the information to notify winners of our on-line contests.

Is there a limit to "My favorites" listings ?
You can store up to 50 items.
How can I modify the title or description of my web site if it has been listed directly by chicline.com ?
By sending a message to edito @ chicline.com with your "My chicline" account username and your E-Mail address. You can check your submission in your "my chicline" account under "My submissions". Please note: if you do not wish your web site to appear on chicline.com, simply send a message to that effect to edito @ chicline.com.
Why is one of my submissions marked: "Submission suppressed" ?
This is attributed to submissions which do not conform to our current listing rules at chicline.com.
How can I add a postal address from the "My Submission" list ?
Identify the submission pertaining to your site, click on "Add an address" and fill out the
form.
Can I modify or delete a postal address associated with my web site from "My Submissions" ?
Yes, in fact this is the only way it can be done.

Lettre de Paris

What is the "Lettre de Paris" ?
The "Lettre de Paris" is a free monthly newsletter about Paris, the City of Light. It generally contains 5 to 10 articles in which editors present a district of Paris, its history, its people, and give some very useful tips.
What is its distribution frequency ?
The "Lettre" is published every month.
How can I subscribe ?
You only need to enter your email address in the "Lettre de Paris" heading situated in the left column (see home page). Then, click on "Subscribe".
How can I unsubscribe ?
Just log in to your "My Chicline" account, go to My profile" and unselect check-box called " La Lettre de Paris - Yes, I want to subscribe to Chicline's Newsletter ".

Technical Problems

My browser will not display upper page images on chicline.com. Why ?
Make sure your browser (MS Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, Opera, Firefox, etc.) is Flash image compatible. You can also visit the Macromedia web site to download Flash Player software.
