8th Arrondissement
The 8th may be the inner-city hub of fashion today, but as late as the early 1800’s this arrondissement was still the two small towns of Roule and Ville L’Eveque.
| United under the Parish of the Church of La Madeleine, the area became a favorite place for wealthy bourgeois to build “country” mansions along the road known today as the Ave. des Champs Elysees.
|
| Now the nine quartiers covering 4 square kilometers are home to a scant 39,000 residents in elegant buildings which have sprouted up in between the mansions of the rich.
|
| The 8th is the epicenter of commercial wealth of the city, and probably has more luxury and fashion shops per block than any other place in the world. It is also the diplomatic section of town, with major Embassies housed in huge buildings with gracious gardens along the Ave. Gabriel and the back streets. |
| Next to the 7th, it is also the greenest arrondissement, with parks on both sides of the Champs-Elysees and the Parc Monceau to the north when it borders on the 17th.
