Viaduc d'Austerlitz
Constructed between 1903 and 1904, this iron structure crosses the Seine between Gare d’Austerlitz and the Quai de la Rapee, and holds the record for the Parisian bridge with the longest single span: 140 metres (459.3 feet).
| Its proximity to the pont d’Austerlitz obliged Biette, the engineer, to plan for a single span only to avoid disturbing the flow of river traffic - a great consideration at that time. Jean-Camille Formige carried out the Art Nouveau style decoration of the viaduct using marine motifs: shells, algae and dolphins. |
| The Austerlitz viaduct was built during the same period as, and is reminiscent of, the Eiffel Tower. |
