Pont d'Austerlitz
The Austerlitz Bridge links the neighborhood surrounding the Gare de Lyon train station on the right bank to the Jardin des Plantes’ botanical gardens on the left.
| This bridge was erected in 1807 by Corneille Lamandé and Becquey de Beaupré to honor the December 1805 victory of Napoleon I over the Austrians and Russians. The plazas located to the north and the south of the bridge are named after two men who were killed during this famous battle—General Valhubert and Colonel Mazas. |
| Weakened by vibrations from heavy traffic, the original Pont Austerlitz was rebuilt in stone in 1855. The construction of this bridge greatly contributed to the economic development of the city’s eastern districts and today it remains one of Paris’ busiest bridges. |
