Pont Saint-Michel
This bridge was constructed in 1378 to connect the Palais Royal (Royal Palace) on the Ile de la Cite, to the developing areas on the left bank. It has been variously known as the Petit Pont, the Petit Pont Neuf and the Pont Neuf.
| Rendered fragile by frost and the Seine’s repeated flooding, the bridge collapsed in 1408 and was replaced in 1416. In 1424 it was baptized with the name of the Saint Michel chapel, since demolished. Struck by a boat in 1547, the bridge collapsed again, along with the 17 houses on it, causing numerous deaths. It was re-built in wood in 1549, but came down again during flood season in 1616. Eventually reconstructed in stone in 1624, it had 32 residential houses along either side until 1786, the last one being demolished in 1809. |
| Vaudrey built the current bridge in 1857, under the reign of Napoleon III. Its tympana are adorned with the imperial ‘N’ - like the Pont au Change. |
