Pont des Invalides
The first Pont des Invalides, a suspension bridge, was erected in 1826 but proved so unsteady the authorities tore it down before its inauguration.
In 1829, a second suspension bridge was built, this time with five spans. Twenty years later, however, ravaged by the Seine’s flooding it too had to be destroyed. In 1854 a stone bridge was built to open in time for the Universal Exposition of 1855 but, in January of 1879, it collapsed during a thaw.
Paris would have to wait until 1890 before the bridge was replaced with a more durable one. Built over four spans with a total length of 68 meters, it is adorned with elegant railings and allegorical statues representing, among other things, great land and sea battles.
The Pont des Invalides links the Place du Canada to the Quai d'Orsay, and serves as a mutual extension of the Ave. Franklin Roosevelt and the Blvd. Latourg-Maubourg.
