Paris Arrondissements

Paris, capital of France, is divided into 20 arrondissements. As the Seine river splits the city into two parts, ‘Rive Droite’ (Right Bank) and ‘Rive Gauche’ (Left Bank) are the French terms commonly used to locate a place in Paris.

Paris was formed of 12 arrondissements up to year 1860, when it was decided to define a larger Paris, composed of 8 additional arrondissements from bordering cities. Today these arrondissements spiral outward in an ascending and clockwise order, starting from the 1st arrondissement, in the middle of Paris.

Most of the Paris arrondissements are located north of the Seine river.
Only the six following arrondissements are located on the Left Bank : le 5th, 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th and the 15th.

Each bank has its own history and its own personality. In short, the right bank is the place for commerce and business, for stately monuments and Haute Couture houses, whereas the left bank, with its numerous colleges and universities, evokes the knowledge and intellectual world, as well as the artistic and bohemian spirit.
