Pont du Garigliano
In 1863, the city of Paris decided to replace the ferryboat that linked the communities of Auteuil and Vaugirard and erected a two-tiered viaduct to carry both automobile and rail traffic in 1865.
| The structure suffered extensive damage during the bombardments of the 1870 siege of Paris and again in 1943 during the Second World War. |
| At the start of the 1960’s, rail traffic had decreased significantly on what was then known as the Petite Ceinture or Little Beltway. At the same time, automobile use was on the rise. A new bridge was needed—one better adapted to modern traffic needs. The Pont de Garigliano opened in 1966 in honor of General Juin’s victory in Italy, in May of 1944. |
