Rue du Bac
The Rue du Bac (named after the boat (or "bac") which used to carry stones during the construction of the Louvre) is the easternmost border of the “Carre Rive Gauche” and a center for the chic, the artistic and the unexpected. For the population of the Rive Gauche, some of whom never cross the Seine, the neighborhood around it is the height of bourgeois fashion.
| Wandering south from the river, one is surrounded by the finest in food and clothing stores, occupying what used to be the literary “salons” of the 18th century. The atmosphere is cloistered as the street is not wide; and the buildings, while housing some of the most exclusive apartments in Paris, appear poorly maintained, but the “cachet” of the street is undeniable. |
| Rue du Bac crosses an unusual neighborhood composed in equal parts of huge government ministries, the offices of the Prime minister, art galleries, including the famous Gallerie Maeght in the former Hotel de Bourgogne, and shops selling everything from shoes to candy. The hidden ministries are housed in some of the most beautiful 18th century mansions in Paris. |
