10th Arrondissement

The 10th is the first part of Paris most travelers from the East and North of France see as they emerge from the immense Gares du Nord and de L’Est. It is a commercial arrondissement intersected by three main streets (the Boulevards Magenta and Strasbourg, and the rue Lafayette), and the quiet Canal St. Martin, leading north to the Porte de la Villette.

The canal district gives the 10th a special atmosphere: green and airy, one of the preferred places families go for stroll on the weekends during the summer. To the east, the narrow streets hold ancient buildings, small apartment and offices. To the west and south, things are more developed, with Kebab shops and general merchandise stores doing heavy sidewalk traffic.

It is home to a large, mixed, immigrant population. With 89,000 residents, it is one of the most populated areas in Paris. In many ways, especially where it abuts the 2nd to the south, it could even be compared to the hustle and bustle and international feel of a city like Hong Kong.
