11th Arrondissement
A discrete non-tourist district of Paris, le 11th has a rich tradition of craft and industry. It was at the heart of the French Revolution and the workers uprisings of the 19th century.
Officially consolidated in 1860 when Belleville and Charonne were annexed into greater Paris, the then 8th arrondissement was renamed the 11th. In 1872, it was the most populated part of the city (over 100,000 inhabitants), due to its extensive cloth and weaving industries.
Today this Paris arrondissement is the first in population density, with nearly 150 000 inhabitants in 366 hectares, at a rate of 41 000 residents per square kilometer.
The 11th is also one of the city’s most diverse arrondissements, boasting strong African, Caribbean, and Muslim communities, and native Parisians alike.
