14th Arrondissement
The 14th has multiple identities: it’s a night-club capital to the north around the Gare Montparnasse, with its huge glass-fronted cafés, some made famous during the “Annees Folles” by artists like Josephine Baker, or later by Sartre and Hemingway.
| To the east, four hospitals and one jailhouse, not the sort of places you'd like to visit! But heading south, one finds a quiet, sophisticated University residential area along the Peripherique, and a very pleasant park called Parc Montsouris. To the west, along the Montparnasse rail tracks, the Losserand district is a rough-and-tumble neighborhood of bare-bones bars and bistros. |
| Planted practically in the middle of it all is the Montparnasse cemetery where luminaries like Charles Baudelaire, Guy de Maupassant, Camille Saint-Saëns, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir rest in peace.
|
| Further toward the 13th is Denfert Rochereau, with the catacombs of Paris: over 60 kilometers of underground graves filled over 200 years from the communal pits of the inner city. |
