15th Arrondissement

The 15th arrondissement was consolidated in 1860 when the neighboring communities of Grenelle and Vaugirard were integrated to its territory. Eight hundred and fifty hectares in area, it is both the largest (besides the forests of Boulogne and Vincennes) and the most populated arrondissement in Paris, with 26,576 residents per square kilometer.

While mostly residential today, the 15th was mainly a traditional throughway from the towns of Sevres and Boulogne, prior to the French Revolution of 1789. It was finally was urbanized largely though the efforts of its largest landowner – Jean-Baptiste Violet who through a series of clever subsidies and land deals created the town of Grenelle almost single-handedly.

Over the years, the 15th has survived urban pollution. It is one of the most pleasant places to live in, and on of the most sought after residential areas of Paris today.
