Pont Sully
The Pont Sully joins the banks of the Ile Saint-Louis and the Institute of the Arab World on the left bank, to the Boulevard Henry IV on the right bank. Its name honours the memory of Maximilien de Bethune, Duke of Sully, and minister of Henry IV.
| The construction of this bridge was part of Baron Haussmann’s grand rebuilding projects in the Latin Quarter. Built from 1874 to 1876 by Vaudrey and Brosselin, this bridge was designed to replace the old Damiette and Constantine foot bridges . The former disappeared during the revolution of 1848 and the latter collapsed in 1877 while undergoing repairs. |
| The bridge's two spans are supported by a central, raised, platform on the extreme eastern end of the Ile Saint-Louis. To this day it remains one of Paris’ rare cast-iron bridges. |
| Thanks to its unique location, the Pont Sully offers magnificent views of Notre-Dame and the docks of Paris. |
