Pont de l'Archevêché
Providing one of the most beautiful views of Notre-Dame de Paris, the bridge was built in 1828 to link the Ile de la Cité with the Quai de Montebello on the Left Bank.
Its name is derived from the old archbishophric that used to stand behind the cathedral on the island, pillaged and burned down during the unrest of 1831.
Designed by Plouard, the bridge measures 68 meters over three spans and has often been a source of navigational difficulties on the river due to their narrowness and low clearance. As if it were not enough of a nuisance to river traffic, the bridge was also the sight of the worst traffic accident in Paris when a horse-drawn omnibus fell off it into the river, killing 10 passengers. (The fate of the horses is unknown).
A marble plaque simply identifies it as : “Pont de l’Archevêché – built under the reign of Charles X – 1828”.
