Pont au Double

In 1643, a twin-span wooden structure was built between the square at Notre-Dame and the left bank of the Seine, to house wards of the over-crowded Hopital Dieu.

Pedestrians could cross the small branch of the Seine, at the discretion of the hospital, for the sum of a “double denier” (double farthing) hence the name.

The hospital wards were not removed until 1835. The present single span iron bridge was built in 1883 as the prolongation of the Rue D’ Arcole and is now reserved for pedestrians.
