Pont d'Arcole

The origin of this bridge dates back to 1828 with the construction of a cast-iron foot bridge linking the Île de la Cité to the Place de la Grève, presently the City Hall Square (Hotel de Ville).

This was replaced by a single 80 meter span in 1856, a real technological feat at the time. The bridge structure had to be reinforced in 1888 after it suddenly subsided 20 cm.

The origins of the name are cloudy, but it is generally believed to refer to the victory of Napoleon Bonaparte over the Austrians in 1796 at Arcole, Italy.
