Petit-Pont

During Gallo-Roman times, a wooden bridge linked the Rue Saint Jacques to the Ile de la Cité. In 1185, however, Maurice de Sully (then Bishop of Paris) ordered it rebuilt in stone.

Over the next three centuries the triple span bridge was carried away countless times by the Seine’s floods and was finally replaced by a single span in 1853 when the smaller branch of the river was made navigable.

This “new” Petit Pont, a 40-meter span of cut stone and rough flint, is the shortest bridge in Paris and little sister to the Pont Notre Dame, formerly the “Grand Pont”, located just north of it on the main branch of the Seine.
