Pont Solférino (Passerelle Solférino)
In honor of a victory against the Italians in June of 1859 Napoleon III inaugurated an iron, three-span, bridge in 1861 connecting the Quai des Tuileries with the Quai Anatole France.
| The original was torn down a century later, having severely suffered the ravishes of the Seine floods, and a temporary bridge was erected from 1961 until 1992. |
| In 1997, the architect Marc Mimram was commissioned to design a new footbridge. His 106 meter, single span, split-level creation was opened to the public in 1999, once again affording residents and tourists alike a lovely promenade between the Louvre and the Orsay museums. Its light, refined lines are enhanced by an ultra tough exotic Azobe wood decking. |
