Pont de l'Alma

The first Alma Bridge was inaugurated by Napoleon III in April 1856 and is named after a Franco-English victory against Russia during the Crimean War in 1854.

As a tribute to the soldiers engaged in the battle, four statues were erected on the pedestals: a Soldier, a Zouave, a Cannoneer and a Hunter.

The narrow bridge was replaced by a single span structure in 1970, conserving only the Diebolt’s Zouave facing upstream; his boots a yearly indicator of the Seine’s flood levels.

The Alma Bridge has recently become an area of compassion since Diana, Princess of Wales, was killed in the underpass in 1997. Each day, flowers and cards are placed near a commemorative plaque in remembrance of the tragic event.
