Poulbot Posters at the Bibliothèque Forney
His works have made him a household name: Francisque Poulbot (1879-1946) leant his name to street urchins everywhere and particularly those of Montmartre. The Bibliothèque Forney and l’Association des amis de Francisque Poulbot have unveiled 30 posters by this talented, big hearted, artist.
| « Le petit Poulbot » was the name given to the fresh faced, tousled haired urchins he so skillfully drew from the misery Paris’s smaller inhabitants lived in at the turn of the century. His rosy cheeked characters illustrated advertising posters in their time and still charm tourists to Montmartre today. |
| Poulbot, who lived on the Ave. Junot at the top of Montmartrte, formed the Republic of Montmartre in 1921. He also founded the Petit Poulbot dispensary to improve the lot of his favorite subjects and was instrumental in getting the community to preserve a small plot of land from developers. That plot is now the Montmartre vineyard, the smallest producing one in the world.
This exhibition doesn’t just bring back the artist, it brings back his whole era. |
