Pont au Change
The Pont au Change is one of the oldest bridges in Paris having its origins in the first century during the Gallo-Roman period. Today it connects the Place du Châtelet to the Palace of Justice on the Île de la Cité.
| The name is derived from an edict issued in 1146 by King Louis VII authorizing moneychangers (meaning jewellers and goldsmiths) to practice their trade on the bridge. |
| The bridge as it exists today dates from 1860 when the Baron Haussmann launched a huge renovation program in the district. Its original seven spans were reduced to three to the great relief of the bargemen who previously had to navigate very carefully as they approached it. |
