Velib', a Great Success!
On 15 July 2007, the City of Paris launched a new self-service bicycle scheme called Vélib'. The idea is to provide citizens with quick and easy bike facilities for short hops around town. It has proven to be a real success so far with two million rentals this summer, and over 50,000 long term subscribers.
| With a bicycle station every 300 meters or so, Vélib' is a whole new transportation system for Paris.
The service is available 24/7, and will doubtlessly revolutionize the way Parisians move around. On average 10 600 Velib' bikes cover 160 000 kilometers daily! Thanks to Vélib', Paris has become the world's largest fitness club! Such problems as a lack of bicycles at some hours of the day, or acts of incivility or vandalism do exist but, on the whole, the operation has proven to be a great success. An instant celebrity, this newest addition to Parisian traffic could best be described with the slogan: "Vélib', cheaper than the metro, faster than your auto".
