Drouant, the Goncourt Restaurant

The ritual has remained unchanged forever (well, since 1914 anyway): The members of the Goncourt academy get together for lunch on the first floor at the beginning of November. They interrupt their meal at about 1 o’clock to announce the Goncourt prize laureate from the top of the large staircase. Then they calmly resume their meal.

The members of the academy will dine on traditional and oh, so delectable, bourgeois dishes: pâté en croûte truffé, terrine de foie gras, pithiviers au gibier, gigot d'agneau rôti, vacherin, etc… and will pay a pittance for the meal: 0.15 Euro (15 cents) in keeping to the letter with the agreement established between Charles Drouant and the academy in 1914.

They, however, are the only ones accorded such privilege. You and I can go and taste the wonders prepared by 3-Star Chef Antoine Westermann and it will cost us considerably more than 15 cents, but what company we’ll be in – and that is priceless.

This year’s paté and game pie brought luck to Gilles Leroy for Alabama Song – the Goncourt winner for 2007.
