Public Transportation in Paris
Paris is renowned for its efficient and inexpensive public transportation. Three major forms of public transit service the city and its environs: the Métro, the RER, and buses. They are run by the RATP, or Régie autonome des transports parisiens.
| Opened in 1900, the Paris Métro is one of the oldest underground train systems in the world. Today there more than 300 Métro stops and 14 lines, which means most destinations are only a short walk from the nearest station. |
| The RER trains are a fast way to reach several major Parisian transport hubs, as well as the suburbs. There are 5 main lines of the RER, designated by the letters A-E. Trains arrive about every 5-10 minutes or so. Take the RER to popular destinations like Versailles and Disneyland Paris. |
| By 1-1:15 am, the Metro and RER, close. Many bus lines stop running around 8:30pm, while more popular ones stop around 12:30am. If you’re still out, look for a Noctilien buses, which run in these off-hours. Noctiliens can be caught at several Parisian train stations, as well as near Châtelet. They stop at a selection of major destinations, including some suburbs. |
