Île Saint-Louis

Up river from the Ile de la Cite, the Ile Saint Louis was created during the XVII century, by joining the uninhabited Ile des Vaches (Cow Island) with the Ile Notre Dame, notorious during the middle ages as a dueling ground.

The unification, completed in 1664 by architect Christophe Marie, made conditions much more favorable for habitation and, owing to its proximity to the law courts on the Ile de la Cité, most of the houses on the quai-side were owned by Magistrates, while the buildings in the interior were inhabited by merchants and the bourgeois (literally “City Dwellers).

A favored place for promenades during the XVIII century, the island fell out of favor for a hundred years but regained its luster after the Second World War, attracting notable artists and personalities of the period.

The Ile Saint Louis is distinguished by its quiet village atmosphere and its church: Saint Louis en l’Ile visited by local residents and the avid fans of its many concerts.
