Pont de la Tournelle

Connecting Ile Saint-Louis and the left bank of the Seine, the Pont de la Tournelle is the sister bridge of the Pont Marie; itself the island’s link to the right bank.

Commissioned by Marie de Médicis and her son Louis XIII, the original wooden bridge was designed by Christophe Marie and built between 1618 and 1620. It was washed away countless times by the Seine until finally being replaced by a stone structure toward the end of the 17th century.

The current bridge, commissioned by the State in 1928 and designed by Paul Landowski, the official sculptor of the Third Republic, was built to coincide with the creation of the 42-foot high Statue de Sainte-Geneviève, patron Saint of Paris.
