Pont Marie

Built under King Louis XIII (1614 to 1635) the Pont Marie is one of the oldest bridges in the capital. It connects the Ile de Saint Louis with the Right Bank, a sister bridge to the Pont de la Tournelle on the Left Bank.

The bridge is named after its designer, Christophe Marie, who made it 22 metres wide; an exceptional achievement for its day. It was originally constructed to accommodate two rows of houses; a common feature in ancient Paris meant to avoid the damage caused by the frequent flooding of the Seine.

It is built in classical style with Renaissance ornamentation. The elegant alcoves lining each side were intended for statues which, curiously, were never erected. The Pont Marie is listed as an historic monument.
