Pont Louis-Philippe

This bridge links the Ile Saint Louis with the Quai de l’Hotel de Ville on the right bank. King Louis-Philippe laid the first stone in July of 1833.

During the Revolution of 1848, the bridge was partially destroyed by fire. Rebuilt, it was known as the “Pont de la Réforme” - the Bridge of Reform - for some time afterward. Deemed too narrow for the ever-increasing traffic it carried, it was completely razed in 1860 and replaced two years later with a stone bridge. Bull’s-eye windows set into the tympana allow light into the bridge’s interior galleries.

While the Pont Louis-Philippe’s parapets were replaced in 1995, the bridge has not required any major structural renovation since 1862.
