Pont Simone de Beauvoir
The 14th of July, 2006, the city of Paris will inaugurate a new bridge, its 37th. This pedestrian-only footbridge will connect the Parc de Bercy, in the 12th arrondissement, to the up and coming new neighborhood of Tolbiac, landing just in front of France’s national library, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (in the 13th). It will be the first bridge of the XXIst century, and also the first to have a woman's name.
| Dietmar Fechtinger, the bridge's architect, has envisioned a two-storied, somewhat ethereal structure built of steel and wood. This footbridge will provide strollers with the opportunity to wander between the park at Bercy and the national library, or “BNF”. |
| The bridge will be called the "Pont Simone de Beauvoir", to pay tribute to the famous writer and philosopher of the 20th century. Bets are high that this new bridge will help confirm Bercy and Tolbiac’s reputations as the capital’s hot new districts. |
