Pont de Tolbiac
This bridge was named after King Clovis’ victory over the Alamanni in 496, at Tolbiac a small village, near Cologne, in what is now Germany. It links the rue de Tolbiac, located next to the Bibliothèque nationale de France (the largest in France) to the rue de Dijon near Bercy.
| During the 20th century, both the Bercy harbor, on the right-bank and the train station on the left were undergoing significant development and the city of Paris decided a new bridge was needed as the Pont de Bercy and the Pont National were too far apart. Bernard and Pérouse were chosen to build what was to be the last stone bridge in Paris. It was inaugurated in 1882. |
| During WW2 a British plane carrying French soldiers crashed into the bridge and a memorial was erected in their honor : “To the memory of the French aviators who lost their lives in the waters of the river to save Paris”. |
| The Pont de Tolbiac services the area around Bercy on the right-bank and Tolbiac on the left and, along with the construction of the library and the re-zoning of the Bercy ware-houses, has contributed greatly to the growth of this part of Paris. |
